Academy - U17 Girls Academy - U17 Academy Girls Win Kick Off Cup!
Submitted By Danielle Byers on Tuesday, May 14, 2019
Over the weekend WRSL teams competed in the annual league Kick Off Cup in Kitchener, Stratford and Tillsonburg.   Our very own 2002 Kitchener Elite Academy girls started off the weekend with a tough draw facing two of their leagues toughest opponents, Sarnia and Guelph.     In addition to having the toughest draw the girls also faced challenges such as frigid wet weather, first match at 8:30am along with a roster of 13 players, but one of their players was injured leaving the girls with 12 players for the entire weekend.

Their first opponent, Sarnia, has always been a challenge, but with wet field conditions the girls really showed their technical ability.  With solid play from the back and creative attacking plays from the top, the girls came out with their first win 4-1.  Goals: Lexi Kroeker - 1, Megan Heyes - 1, Alexa Cimermancic - 2.

Game 2 versus Guelph was a hard fought battle as opponents often play their best when facing the Kitchener Academy Girls.  Several chances from the girls with missed opportunities, and a key save from Lauren Drummond kept the score at a 0-0 tie.   Their goal was to place first in their pool to allow for rest and a bye into the semifinals, but the girls ended up seeding in third which meant a full day of soccer on Mother's day.

The  next day their first match versus Cambridge started off slow, but they started to loosen up from the previous days competition, and the goals began to pour into the opposing teams goal.  5-0 win.  Goals: Sasha Marikano - 2, Alexa Cimermancic-2, Gabby Machado -1.

In the semis versus the London White Caps, it was a challenge for both teams as they had both put in many hours of competition.  Some great play from both teams which resulted in our girls loan goal coming from Alexa Cimermancic. 1-0 win.

Off to the finals for the third consecutive year!  The team would face Guelph to decide who would become this years U17 Champions.  The previous days match amongst the two teams was a tie, which sure left doubt on which way this final game would end up.   Spirits were high amongst the girls, and it seemed the roster of players were replaced by new fresh legs as they came out playing their best match of the weekend when it mattered most.  They outplayed their opponent defensively, while finishing on goal to produce a 5-1 win.  Goals:  Alexa Cimermancic -1, Sasha Marikano - 1, Lexi Kroeker - 3

Congratulations to the girls and they now look to compete in the Ontario Cup in hopes on repeating their 2017 performance, and attend Nationals in P.E.I. this October.

Left to Right: Back: Bhen Odol, Lexi Kroeker, Mackenzie Martin, Alexa Cimermancic, Sasha Marikano, Myaura Browne, Caley Anderson.   Front: Mackenzie Forte, Gabby Machado, Nika Lesic, Lauren Drummond, Ally Wesenberg, Megan Heyes.
