Home Opener: U14 Spirit 0 Waterloo United 1
Submitted By Mark Rebellato on Monday, June 3, 2019
In our 2019 home opener at Woodside Park, Waterloo was out for revenge after losing to us in the Kick-Off Cup finals only three weeks ago.

Coming off a fantastic victory against the Whitecaps just two days ago, we played a strong first ten minutes, but for the rest of the game we seemed a bit fatigued.  Waterloo's key to success on this night was a very disciplined defend, where they deployed four of five principles of play quite well off the ball (Compact, Depth, Balance, Control and Restraint).  They did apply the fifth principle of pressure at about a B- as we had time to be patient on our attack and make better attempts to draw them off their game.  Throughout the match, we were impatient in trying to squeeze balls through traffic, sending long balls on untimely runs and a few times we would kick the ball away rather than use our skill and in turn lose possession.
In the first half we did find the back of the net, but the goal was called off on what seemed to be a questionable offside.
The loan goal of the game by Waterloo was scored on a play deep in our zone where for some reason we did not apply pressure and Waterloo moved the ball from the left side of our box to find an open #21 just inside the 18 yard lines for the eventual game winner.

Bottom Line: We need to be more patient on the ball and look to draw our opponents off their positioning when they are playing a disciplined game.  We can do this with looking to run full switch plays to open field.  Our game is most effective when we apply strong pressure against our opponents, losing Paul (leg injury) and Oliver (illness) and Ayman (leg injury) in the middle of the game along with players who were out of lineup makes it difficult to play hard for 80 minutes.  It is important that Coaches know know as early as possible if players can't dress for a game to ensure we can call players from our other teams.

We will have mark July 8th on our calendars where we will redeem ourselves at RIM Park in Waterloo.

Man of the Match: Luka Tripic for his sound defensive play and skillful movement on the ball and sending some nice passes up field along the line.

Injured Players in this Game: Roman, Mohammed
Out of lineup: Nathan
